Brittain turned 18 Friday, and started being a bad ass Saturday. She got her second tattoo of a bird flying away from a tree on her back. It was killer painful, but she was a trooper. And I think it's totally worth it.

Regardless of everything, I always want to be who I've always been. I never want to stop leaving the house with my camera, finding an abandoned swimming pool and just laying. Taking pictures, and not caring about thirds... or the three points of focus, or any of the rules of photography... because I just want to remember this girl.

So, over the summer my photography teacher at Columbia showed us www.iwanexstudio.com. It's a celebrity retouching company, and they have some before and after portraits and such on their website. So, then I found out we don't have school tomorrow, and I tried to retouch a picture of myself a little bit. Just trying some stuff out, I guess... whatever. Here's the before and after.

Ian, Ben, and Jake were in serious panic mode during lunch today. There was a notebook check in their calculus class, and I will just say that Ben bought a binder yesterday and leave the rest of the unbelievable procrastination up to your imagination. At Hume-Fogg, we eat lunch on the floor, so the study environment is just kind of crazy... So I tried to make a little story about it, and here it is.

Also, in regards to these boys, and my school as a whole, I have to say that I am really lucky and thankful to be surrounded by people who let me do my thing, and don't freak out about it. If I haven't made it clear how grateful I am of that, I hope I have now. It makes all the difference in the world to be surrounded by willing and understanding people.

Most of the kids are in middle school, but read and speak English on a first or second grade level. To be honest, I got so caught up with the kids that I spent the majority of my time pretending that I knew how to do long division to help a boy named Richard.

Bomb Threat/First Day of School!

August 11th was the first day of school for most public schools in Nashville, and like most kids, we at Hume Fogg were in a daze...

Roughly half way through the day, however, the entire school rushed out due to a bomb threat (which everyone is convinced was called in by a Sophomore who was kicked out for doing exactly things like that).

We were scared.

There were several police cars, marked and unmarked, who apparently searched the school for the maaaaayyybe 15 minutes that the entire school stood in a parking lot about a block away from school. And of course, the poor girl with a broken leg...

Then, it was back to work! Like true magnet school students! I guess, if nothing else, it woke us up.

I am back in Nashville and have been for a couple days. I am, for the first time in a while, actually picture-less. In fact, my camera isn't even in my house. It's at my dads, sitting somewhere in my room, which happens to be a mess.

In short, Nashville is dull. And I don't know why I expected anything else. Tiny, tiny, tiny.

At the latest, I will have pictures Saturday, because the Tomato Fest in East Nash is that day.

The train is especially squeaky tonight, and I love it. I am jamming under my headphones and periodically drawing with my assorted sharpie collection to my right. there are four almost-empty water bottles on my desk, that I am periodically flipping over to rid them of condensation bubbles. But this is turning out to be a problem because it is making me have to pee.

My phone is on the right corner of my desk, pointed toward the window, for optimum service (one bar). I have two dollars to my left. One metal spoon, one plastic spoon, one camera bag, one iHome connected to one iPod, one bag of Chips Ahoy!, and two ID cards for various Columbia activities.

I am entering my third week up here, taking classes, and they are going pretty well. I dropped my improv class (it was fun, but it was too much), so now I have enough time to do my Fiction Writing homework.

Things I need to get up on: Homework for REAL school. That thing I have to do in, oh, less than a month.

.......crap.

I should get some sleep, my brain is crazy. Alright, let's root for lucid dreams tonight. Let's do that.

Jordon and his mom and Emily were in town today. We walked the magnificent mile and ate Italian food. I feel silly and crazy and lonely in a big city. I miss Hayley and Brittain and my dad and my brother and my Ruby and my Josh, and the feelings of familiarity. I love this city, though, the noise, the views, the energy, the way it makes me look at life differently, the way I am secretly exhilarated when I ride the train. I love my classes, being surrounded by creativity, my teachers exuberance, life's twisted and turns. It is beautiful. It is.

Summer Time Activities

The neighbor's dog from two doors down has been hanging around here a lot. Her name is Dash and she is too sweet to be running around all the time, but every time I take her back, no one is home, or they tell me not to worry about her. I want to keep her because I don't think they are good pet owners.

I have been in summer school. Today was the last day. Summer school was good because:
1. half hour break in the middle
2. Ipod and cell phone legality
3. incredibly entertaining/terrifying student body

I went to Miami with my dad for father's day. I found shells on the beach and watched a scary movie and enjoyed the sunshine. I got dad What Happened, the book about the Bush administration. He really liked it.

I hung out with Joe to get out of the house. We ate cheeseburgers and shopped for cassette tapes, because his new car doesn't have a CD player.

I babysat Allie and Nicholas. I'm a bad baby sitter because I fell asleep. But when I woke up, they were both asleep too, so everything was alright.

I have a good picture for today, or maybe even a couple, but I feel like writing/divulging emotion more than anything right now. Today was wonderful and exhausting, and due to that exhaustion, I had an extreme over-reacting incident which left me feeling crazy and paranoid for the better half of the evening. I'm generally level headed, but after a long walk and taking pictures in lots of extraneous positions, about anything could throw me into tears.

Today was mostly intense. Photographing a Senate hopeful who's marching across Tennessee to gain votes involved running across Woodland Street Bridge, and constantly playing catch up with myself, my car, and Bob Tuke, dude running for senate. Then rushing to meet Ira Glass (THAT'S RIGHT) and then hear him speak at The War Memorial Building. It was just kind of a lot.

Of course, in between these moments there were smoothies, and feeling proud of myself, and silly trips to Kroger... then there were those three glasses of wine I had while waiting on Ira Glass to sign my poster! That was good.

It's summer. It's nice that it feels that way. Hayley got her wisdom teeth out and i have been a bad friend about it. I need to go see her.

I'm fucking tired. I'm fucking in love. It's wonderful, it's ridiculous, it keeps coming up in weird and ironic and funny ways.

So, there's that for your liking. Also, I had the find of the day on foundmagazine.com yesterday...

Cookout, turned cook-in, turned trampoline party. I know, now, going into any social situation that isn't my own friends or people who really know me, to expect the questions and comments about my camera. "Pretty big camera you got there, huh?" "What's with the camera?" "Are you a photographer or something?" I mean, or something... I guess.

It's just interesting. There are people who immediately wonder why their picture is being taken, like the boy in the first photo. We were watching Hercules, and I figured nothing could distract him. I was right about his brother, but wrong about him. Ethan immediately looked at me, asked why, and then asked to see the pictures, while I'm sure Ryan, his brother, didn't even notice I had moved to take the picture.

Adults will sometimes scream/giggle, mostly women. "don't take my picture!!" They dive behind their Better Homes and Gardens, or their husbands, who have the most who-gives-a-shit expression on their faces.

And then there are people like Jacqueline, who, for some unknown reason, just get it. She is relaxed and indifferent to the camera, and when I ask her if she'll put up with standing in a certain spot for me, she shrugs and tells me a story about her school or her friends, and then we keep talking, and eventually we have made plans to paint one wall of her room some time this summer.

Jacqueline is one of my favorite people, and if we hadn't wasted so much time doing flips on the trampoline, or playing baseball with a soccer ball, I would have made her stand or sit in various places around her entire house, which is old and covered from top to bottom in Victorian decor, 80s and 90s family photos, various stringed instruments played by Jacqueline's father, and books... thousands of books. Ranging from children's stories to any Christian related literature you can think of.

And Jacqueline seems oblivious to these things. She is open and unattached to much of anything, unless you include her dogs. Of course, I've known Jacqueline and her family for my entire life, but things change just the slightest bit when I look through my camera at a person. It makes things different, more real, more planned, easier to understand. It makes me categorize people in ways I wouldn't be able to without photography. It makes me learn people, and what makes them uncomfortable.

Jacqueline, unlike Ethan, is uninterested in viewing the pictures of herself. As far as she is concerned, we're talking about Penguins and Global Warming, and whether or not she has a deck of cards in her room. It's incredible.
